It's looking likely that iPhone fans may have to buy some new accessories (or at least an adapter or two) when the next version of the handset comes out. A new report from Reuters claims that Apple is planning to switch to a smaller, 19-pin dock connector with its next iPhone. This is according to "two sources familiar with the matter" who claim that the move is being made in order to make room for the headphone jack moving to the bottom of the device. A separate Reuters report reiterates previous claims that the next iPhone will also feature a larger screen.
Rumors of a smaller dock connector for the new iPhone have been floating around for months now. Additionally, some back panels purportedly belonging to the next-generation iPhone leaked out in late May, and they also features a smaller hole for the dock connector and a headphone jack on the bottom. While today's report doesn't explain exactly why Apple may be planning to shrink its dock connector, such a move could help the company to stuff more components inside its handset. The extra space provided by a smaller dock connector may not seem like much, but when you're dealing with devices as small and thin as modern smartphones, every little bit helps. The new iPhone is rumored to be debuting in the fall.
UPDATE: Just for those of you that might be curious, the folks at iMore are reporting that Apple intends to offer an adapter that'll allow the new small dock connector to work with accessories meant for use with the current 30-pin connector. There's no word yet on whether or not the adapter will be included with the new iPhone or not, but at least those of you looking forward to the device don't need to throw out any current iPhone accessories you may have.
