The Nokia Lumia 900 impressed quite a few folks when it made its debut at CES, but the device was repeatedly described as being an AT&T exclusive, much to the disappointment of anyone not already on the carrier and unwilling to make the switch. There may still be hope for the non-AT&T crowd interested in a 900, though, if a new rumor sent to Paul Thurrott of WinSuperSite is to be believed.
The source of the rumor claims that the exclusive that AT&T has on the 900 is of the temporary variety and that it's set to expire 45 days after the device's launch. After that time, other carriers would be allowed to work with Nokia on versions of the 900 that'd play nice with their networks. The tipster thinks that T-Mobile could be getting a version of the 900 in the third quarter of 2012, adding that Verizon would "probably" get a 900 variant and "possibly" Sprint as well. Lastly, the source alleges that these new 900 models could have a 12-megapixel camera, a bump from the 8-megapixel shooter of the AT&T 900.
As usual, it's worth taking this report with a few grains of your favorite kind of salt. Thurrott notes that the rumor came from a carrier source and that he's unable to back up its validity. That said, Nokia has mentioned that it's interested in working with all of the carriers to gain their support, so the thought of Lumia 900 variants on other networks may not be too crazy. The third quarter may be pretty far off, especially in the world of mobile, but at this point I'm sure that customers on carriers like Sprint and Verizon would welcome just about any new Windows Phone device they could get.
