Amazon to release a 9-inch Android tablet before October?

Rumblings of an Amazon-branding Android tablet date all the way back to September of last year, but a fresh rumor is claiming that the device may finally be here soon. According to "people familiar with the matter" speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon is planning to release its slate sometime before October. The device is said to have a 9-inch display, an unnamed version of Android (likely Honeycomb), and the ability to easily interact with music, movies, and books purchased from Amazon. What it reportedly won't have, though, is a camera. It's also said that Amazon will introduce two new Kindles in the third quarter: one with a touchscreen and a cheaper, non-touch version.

Past rumors have claimed that Amazon is actually prepping a pair of tablets, one with a dual-core processor and another with a quad-core CPU, but this latest rumor makes no mention of either of those details. Whatever specs the tablet does feature, it'll have the potential to really gain some market share thanks to the Amazon's huge presence in the retail space. If a launch really is coming before October arrives, we should be learning more sooner rather than later, so stay tuned.
