HP extends $50 TouchPad mail-in rebate to Pre and Pixi owners

Way back in February, HP revealed that the Pre, Pre Plus, Pixi, and Pixi Plus wouldn't see an update to webOS 2.0 and beyond because the hardware just wasn't able to run the new software properly. To soothe the anger of the early webOS adopters, HP promised that it had something special planned for owners of those older devices, and today we've finally learned what that something is. HP just announced on its official blog that owners of the Pre, Pre Plus, Pixi, and Pixi Plus are eligible for a $50 mail-in rebate on a 32GB TouchPad when it launches next month. The offer is available regardless of where you buy your TouchPad and also applies to pre-orders. You'll need to supply proof of purchase for your webOS handset, and the promotion will run through July 31st. HP says it's sending details of the offer out to owners by email, so be sure to begin diligently check your inbox!

It's good to see HP follow through on its promise to owners of the aging Pres and Pixis of the world, especially since the company is making it easier to get in on the webOS 3.0 fun with the TouchPad lands on July 1st. That said, I'm not sure that everyone is going to be thrilled with HP's olive branch to early webOS adopters. What HP should do is extend the rebate to include the Veer and Pre 3 as well. Doing so would keep those webOS owners in the family and would probably entice many of them to pick up a TouchPad alongside their new handset in order to take advantage of all the sharing features that the devices are capable of. What do you think of HP's promo? Are any of you Pre or Pixi owners going to take HP up on its offer?
