One of the biggest changes that most everyone is expecting to see in iOS 5 is an all-new notifications system, which I'm sure most would agree is sorely needed. There may be another change in the works for iOS 5, though, that could be just as big for the platform. According to "multiple sources" speaking with 9 to 5 Mac, iOS 5 will introduce the ability for users to install OS updates over the air rather than forcing them to plug their device into a computer and update that way. It's being reported that Apple and Verizon have been in talks over the feature since earlier this year. There's no mention of Apple working with AT&T on the feature, but that doesn't mean that AT&T iPhone users won't get the feature.
As 9 to 5 Mac notes, there are a couple of things that Apple would need to change about their update process in order to make OTA updates a possiblity: the size of the new software, which can be over half a gig, and the backup process. If Apple can get those two issues ironed out, I'm sure that they'd love to give users the option to update OTA, especially since that's a feature that other platforms have been enjoying for some time now. We're expecting to see iOS 5 make its grand debut at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference early next month, so we won't have to wait long to find out if a new notification system and OTA updates are indeed in the cards for the next major revision of iOS.
