Owners of the Motorola Atrix 4G and HTC Inspire 4G, you may want to head into your phone's Settings section and fire up System Update. Why, you ask? Because AT&T is now pushing out updates for both devices that, among other things, will enable HSUPA. Atrix 4G owners are looking for update 4.1.83, which will contain Android 2.2.2 as well as the following improvements:
- Data Speed: Increased potential data speed.
- Data Connection: Improvements to limit interruptions to data connection.
- Screen: Improvements to prevent screen from freezing.
- Email: Improved ability for users to receive email notifications so you know when you have a new message. Also, improvements were made so that you are now able to use the same email login to access both MOTOBLUR™ and YouTube.
- Skype: Improvements to call audio function so it is easier for the person you called to hear you. Please note this application is not pre-loaded on the phone, but is available for download from the Android Market.
- Wi-Fi: Increased functionality by enabling Yahoo Email to be sent over a Wi-Fi connection.
- Display: Improved International Roaming Warning Message by simplifying user notification so that it only appears on the screen when you move to a new network.
- Happenings Widget: Improved Happenings Widget to ensure that you receive the latest updates across the social networks you are connected to such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter.
- Calling: Improvements were made to incoming and outgoing call functionality to ensure a more seamless experience.
Meanwhile, everyone that uses an Inspire 4G will be getting update 1.84.502.11, which includes:
- Hotmail, Live, and MSN email auto configuration settings update.
- Makes the email set up process much easier and includes the most current settings for each type of email.
- Increased potential data speed at which data can travel on the network.
You'll need to be connected to WiFi in order to initiate the downloads and, once the process is complete, you should be able to access HSUPA speeds on your AT&T 4G smartphones. Although it certainly would've been nice if the feature were enabled out of the box, I'm sure most Atrix and Inspire owners are just happy that it's finally here after all of the madness that's taken place over the past couple of months.
