AT&T drops plan requirement for Quick Messaging Devices

Good news for anyone considering picking up one of AT&T's Quick Messaging Devices (QMDs) anytime soon: you'll no longer be required to sign up for a messaging plan with your handset. In January 2010, AT&T began requiring that customers buying a QMD also select a $20 messaging and/or data plan, but the requirement was given the axe around February of this year. Now when picking up a QMD on ATT's website, the carrier simply "recommends adding a Messaging Unlimited feature to your order" so that you'll have "the best possible experience" with your handset.

Although I'm sure that most folks that plan on buying one of AT&T's QMDs plan on picking a messaging plan to go along with it, it's good to see Ma Bell no longer forcing users to agree to a plan that they didn't need. So, how many of you ATT messaging phone users are looking forward to saving a few bucks a month?
