Ever since we first learned about the AT&T/T-Mobile merger, Sprint has been pretty vocal about its opposition to the deal. Today Sprint may have gotten an ally in New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. In a statement to Bloomberg, Schneiderman says that he's concerned that an AT&T-Mobile merger could negatively impact the number of choices available to people looking for a wireless carrier, especially in more rural areas, as well as folks that are with T-Mobile because it's a "low-cost option." Schneidermean's statement can be found below:
“Affordable wireless service and technology, including smart phones and next generation handheld devices, are the bridge to the digital broadband future. We want to ensure all New Yorkers benefit from these important innovations that improve lives.”
Although Schneiderman didn't come out and say that he'll be opposing the deal, it certainly doesn't sound like he'll be making things easy as AT&T attempts to get government approval on its acquisition. I'm sure he won't be the only one, as many others are against a possible AT&T/T-Mobile merger for the same reasons as Scheiderman. We'll continue to keep a close eye on the situation as to progresses, so stay tuned.
