Motorola's stance on Android hacking is pretty well-known (they're not fans), and sadly, it doesn't look like that's going to be changing any time soon. After watching a YouTube video demonstrating the Atrix 4G and its docks, one user made a comment about how they'd like to be able to put custom ROMs on any device they purchase. Motorola responded, although their answer was, well, a bit snarky:
"@tdcrooks if you want to do custom roms, then buy elsewhere, we'll continue with our strategy that is working thanks."
Moto's comment has since been removed and they've apologized for the wording used. We'll forgive them for the somewhat rude comment, but it's kind of disappointing that the company hasn't changed their stance on locking up the bootloaders on their handsets. This is especially true when they make good Android handsets (both the DROID 2 and DROID X are two of our favorite smartphones in Verizon's lineup). I'll continue to hope that Moto eventually makes their handsets a bit more hacker friendly, but in the mean time, it looks like those users that want to completely trick out their Android and make it their own may have to look elsewhere. Are any of you going to take Motorola's advice and buy from other manufacturers?
