There's been a lot of will it, won't it debate when it comes to whether or not the next iPad will have a higher resolution, and now a new report has come out claiming that the iPad 2's res will be unchanged from the current model. The latest claim comes from John Gruber of Daring Fireball, whose sources say that the next model won't have a "super high resolution display" due to costs and the amount of RAM that would be necessary to power a Retina-like iPad 2 display. That's not to say that the iPad 2 screen won't be improved, though, as Gruber believes that Apple's next tablet could feature a display that's brighter and thinner, and that the company may use a new manufacturing technique to make the screen "look more like pixels on glass rather than pixels under glass."
So will the iPad 2 have a higher-res display? It's tough to predict. The first three generations of the iPhone had the same resolution, but then the iPhone 4 and its Retina Display upped the game for iOS devices. The iPad could follow a similar formula, meaning the second model will have updated internals, but largely the same screen tech. Then, once costs go down and Apple is able to stuff more RAM inside the iPad's frame, we could very well see a display resolution that matches or exceeds the ones found on many laptops today. Would any of you be disappointed if the iPad 2 had the same resolution as the current iPad?
