Way, way back in June 2010, we reported that a group calling themselves Goatse Security had exposed the email addresses of 114,000 iPad owners, including several high-profile figures. Fast-forward seven months later, and two men have been arrested for causing the breach. Andrew Auernheimer and Daniel Spitler have been charged with conspiracy to access a computer without authorization and fraud for allegedly breaking into AT&T's servers and outing the email addresses. Unsurprisingly, Auernheimer and Spitler claim that they went through with the hack to force AT&T to close the hole.
On one hand, you have to be kind of glad that these two hackers managed to out such a glaring hole in AT&T's security. On the other hand, though, it seems kind of strange that they felt the need to out over 100,000 email addresses if they were only trying to help reveal AT&T's hole. Where do you stand on the issue? Are Auernheimer and Spitler guilty, or should they be let go for showing everyone the big problem with ATT's security?
