RIM introduced BlackBerry Protect back in July to help owners locate, lock, or wipe their lost handsets, and now AT&T and Verizon are upping their mobile security in order to help protect customers and their beloved handsets. According to the Wall Street Journal, Verizon is working closely with Lookout, known for its location apps for BlackBerry and Android, to help promote software that can help consumers keep their phones, and data, safe. AT&T has signed deals with McAfee and MobileIron to distribute both companies' security and device management software and is also opening a lab in New York City dedicated to mobile security and headed up by 13 Ph.Ds.
Considering how popular smartphones are now and will become in the future, it's nice to see the carriers investing so heavily in mobile security. Lookout has been pretty popular as of late, especially since it was featured in a Verizon DROID commercial, and should even more adoption now that Big Red's employees will be recommending it to customers. As for AT&T, well, they seem to be going all-out when it comes to security. How many of you have used a security app like Lookout in the past?
