The Credit Suisse 2010 Technology Conference probably isn't the first place you'd expect to learn some juicy mobile info, but thanks to Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha, that's exactly what we got. During a keynote speech at the conference, Jha covered a wide range of topics concerning mobile, including 4G, tablets, Verizon Wireless, and Motorola's history with first quarters. There's quite a bit of info to digest here, so we'll break things down for you. First up, Jha spoke on the topic of tablets, confirming that Motorola will be entering the arena with both 7-inch and 10-inch tablets in the near future, although the company will continue to focus primarily on smartphones. With their tablets, Moto will focus on differentiating its software, targeting the enterprise, international and retail markets, with the latter being a big opportunity for tablet devices, says Jha.
Since Motorola will be focusing more on smartphones than tablets, you're probably wondering what kind of devices to expect from the company. According to Jha, Moto will continue to bring high-end and mid-range products to market. Interestingly, Jha says that the mid-tier devices have sold well internationally while the higher-end products have been more popular in the U.S. Oh, and 4G handsets? Moto's got 'em. Jha says that his company will have 4G-capable phones in the market "early next year."
Finally, Jha gave likely the most tantalizing bit of info while speaking about Motorola's history in the first quarter of the year. Jha explained that Moto is always a little down in Q1, and Q1 2011 won't be any different. However, he feels that there will be a new "competitive dynamic" at Verizon in the first quarter of next year that could have a serious negative impact on Moto's Q1 numbers. He didn't get into specifics, but there is a certain mythical device that has been heavily rumored to be launching in the first quarter of next year.
While not actually mentioning it by name, many believe that Jha is referring to the Verizon iPhone in his statement. Given all of the information we've seen so far, it certainly seems that that's what he's talking about, and the iBigRedPhone is just about the only thing I can think of that could have such a detrimental effect on Motorola's numbers. Still, I've got a feeling that Moto will be ok, especially with all of the other info that Jha gave us. I'm glad that we finally have confirmation that Motorola will be entering the exciting world of tablets, and I'm definitely looking forward to see what they can bring to the table. Perhaps those Tegra 2 tablet rumors weren't too far off after all?
