Verizon iPhone rumors used to be a dime a dozen, but now it seems that Verizon iPhone confirmations are even more prevalent. The latest confirmation comes from Fortune, who claims that, yes, the mythical iBigRedPhone will be coming to store shelves in "early 2011." The device, according to Fortune, will be an iPhone 4 that will be CDMA-only, meaning there will be no globetrotting iPhone on Verizon for the time being.
Fortune's article is an interesting read about soon-to-be-replaced Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg and the history between Apple and Verizon concerning the CDMA iPhone. The two companies went back and forth a couple of times before and after the first iPhone's release in 2007, and the iPad being sold at Verizon is said to be one of the results from some of their later discussions. There are concerns that when the Verizon iPhone does finally land that it will strain Big Red's network like it has done to AT&T, but Seidenberg feels confident that his network will withstand the data onslaught. Verizon's DROIDs have been pegged as data-heavy phones themselves, so it's assumed that the network will be fine with the iPhone, too, but Fortune points out that the number of iPhones in use is quite a bit higher than the number of DROIDs in the wild. On one hand, I have a feeling that Verizon's network will hold up to the strain of the millions of iPhones that are sure to be sold, but at the same time, I'm not quite as confident. We've seen that both Android devices and the iPhone are data-hungry, but AT&T isn't exactly known for their Android phones. What happens when you combine the iPhone with Verizon's hugely popular line of DROIDs? It's tough to say right now, but with all of these Verizon iPhone confirmations flowing in like candy in a kid's trick-or-treat bag, we won't have to wait long to find out.
