Apple App Store surpasses 300,000 apps available

The quality vs. quantity debate is going to rage on for some time to come, but we do know one thing for certain when it comes to Apple's App Store: they have a boatload of apps.  There are now over 300,000 iOS apps available in Apple's store front, and that number is said to be growing at a rate of 1,000 apps per day.  At the time of Venture Beat's report, there were 300,975 apps in the App Store, with a total of 206,828 paid apps and 94,147 free apps.  The closest competitor to the App Store in terms of quantity is the Android Market, with either 113,123 apps (according to AndroLib.com) or around 90,000 apps (according to Google last week).

There's no question that iOS is an attractive platform for developers, especially because of Apple's recent easing of the App Store rules.  Still, some devs may feel that as more and more apps hit Apple's store, it's becoming increasingly difficult to stand out.  Android is, as always, an increasing threat to Apple's dominance as well.  Google's platform is constantly growing, both in number of apps and devices being launched.  With the sheer number of handsets running Android available on just about every carrier there is, some devs may feel that they've got a better shot at success with Google's green robot.
