CNN releases "Election Center" app ahead of midterm elections

Today CNN starts its coverage of the Midterm Elections with the release of it's cross-platform application, CNN Election Center App. CNN is providing coverage for the Midterm Elections by way of the Internet, mobile, and television. The mobile application is offered free of charge and is offered for BlackBerry, Android, iPhone and iPod Touch, and can be found in their respective application stores.

The application will provide important political news through text, videos, pictures, and user-generated content capture and upload that can be uploaded through CNN's iReport. From the application, users will be able to view the latest headlines on related to the Elections and share those stories via email, Facebook, and Twitter. You will be able to select up to 15 races to "follow" until November 2, and on election day, the application will offer real-time updates to election results for the House, Senate, and gubernatorial races, and key ballot measures, listed alphabetically by state.

If you're an Android, iPhone, or iPod Touch user, you will have the option to opt-in to Midterm news updates pushed to your device. Unfortunately, BlackBerry users do not have this option. The application will also allow users to participate in the Daily Vote and iReport Election Project. Participants in this project will be able to:

  • Take a quiz to establish their political identity;
  • Browse iReports related to the Midterm Elections;
  • Capture and instantly upload user-generated photos and videos related to the Midterm Election; and
  • Earn special badges to be featured on their iReport profile page?

The release of this application is the first of any major cable news brand to launch a mobile application on the three major mobile operating systems simultaneously. Hats off to CNN by not favoring one OS over the other and releasing for all platforms at the same time. From what I can tell, this application is extremely in-depth and well-rounded, so if you're into the elections and want to stay up-to-date, this app is definitely for you.

Also, be sure to tune in tonight at 7:30 p.m. to view the Delaware debate co-hosted by Wolf Blitzer. To learn more about the CNN Election Center Application, click here, and you can view the full press release here.
