There's no question that Android has been growing at an extremely rapid pace over the last year or so, and much of that growth can be attributed to the Motorola DROID. Today the folks at Millenial Media have put out their August 2010 Mobile MIx report, which echoes that fact. The report shows that Android ad requests have increased 39 percent month-over-month, which is a pretty impressive number. More impressive, though, is the fact that, since January, the platform has grown a whopping 996 percent. This makes Android the second-largest OS on the Millenial Media network, with a 26 percent share. Apple's iOS is currently in first place in the network's OS mix with 48 percent. Also of note is the fact that smartphones make up 51 percent of the device mix on the network, edging out both feature phones and connected devices.
When it comes to specific manufacturers and devices, Apple has managed to edge out the competition in both categories. The company has 28.32 percent of the market, with Samsung in second place at 15.46 percent and Motorola in third with 14.32 percent. The iPhone was able to snag a 27.67 percent share when it comes to specific devices, with the Motorola DROID coming in second with 9.44 percent. Interestingly, there are seven Android phones in the list of the top 20 devices, which helps to illustrate the platform's diversity. Finally, iPad ad requests have grown 76 percent month-over-month, showing the rising popularity of Apple's 10-inch device, as well as a growing acceptance of tablets in general.
Considering how often RIM and their BlackBerry devices are shown to be the top smartphone platform in the U.S., I was surprised to see that they only made up 19 percent of the smartphone OS mix. Still, the platform is continuing to grow, just like Android, experiencing 16 percent more ad requests month-over-month, with a total increase of 93 percent since January. It'll be interesting to see what kind of impact Windows Phone 7 has on these numbers after it's finally launched in the next couple of months. The smartphone OS wars are going to be heating up soon!
