BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion may be losing some market share to Google and their Android OS, but they're still the top smartphone platform in the U.S., and they've got the numbers to prove it. RIM recently released their second quarter numbers, announcing that they had earned a net income of $796.7 million, quite a leap from the $475.6 million income earned during Q2 2009. Moving on to the handsets, RIM managed to ship 12.1 million BlackBerrys during Q2, bringing the total number of 'Berrys shipped to date to 115 million. Of those 12.1 million handsets shipped, approximately 4.5 million were new BlackBerry subscribers. These 4.5 million new subs have managed to push the total number of BlackBerry subscribers over 50 million.
There are definitely some platforms that are beginning to challenge RIM's dominance in the smartphone market, but these numbers go to show that the company isn't going anywhere any time soon. The fact that you can pick up a BlackBerry on just about every carrier, including most regional carriers, and the low price of devices like the Curve lineup means that BlackBerrys are an attractive choice for businesses and new smartphone owners. With several new devices, the BlackPad, and BlackBerry 6, it's obvious that RIM is going to be a contender for some time to come.
