LG Wrist Phone headed for UK

LG's Wrist Phone is no concept phone, crazy off-label concoction or glorified Bluetooth accessory, but a real, high-end, working communications device.

A wristwatch'sized handcrafted mobile, the touchscreen phone comes with a Bluetooth headset and features video-calling capabilities and HSDPA connectivity for high-speed Internet.  



Oh, but it's unfair: A true video-enabled wristphone from a major manufacturer is finally launching, and it's not destined for the U.S., the home of Dick Tracy? Huge bummer.

Well, at least maybe the bugs will be worked out before the mobile makes its way over the pond. When that will be is anyone's guess, but for now it's set to debut in the U.K. in August. It will be an exclusive for European carrier Orange for a limited time.

What's not limited is the pricetag: £1,000 (approximately US$1,640) for pay-as-you-go (SIM-only) customers. Gulp! Oh well, so much for legions of Brits getting to play 007. Like usual, looks like the only ones getting any ultra-cool spy play will be the wealthy.

UPDATE: This device, also known as the LG GD910 Watch Phone, has passed the
FCC. So it will hopefully not be too long before it arrives in the U.S. Here are more details on the phone:

It features a touchscreen display (1.43 inches, diagonal), stereo Bluetooth, speakerphone, music player, tempered glass, metal casing, LG's Flash interface, voice recognition, and Text to Speech (to read text messages out loud). It has a thickness of around 13.9 mm, is water resistant and works on quad-band GSM. A lot of people think that the 3G/HSDPA will work with AT&T's network, but that hasn't been 100% confirmed yet. If it does, then theoretically, people who have some cash to burn could pick this up in Europe, then use it over here. That is, if you have $1,600 bucks burning a hole in your pocket.
