Samsung Qi Wireless Charging Pad for Galaxy S6 Review

I bought my Galaxy S6 Edge at Best Buy. And no this isn’t a sponsor or anything. But they did bundle my S6 Edge with this white box, which contains the official Samsung Wireless Charging Pad in black sapphire. I assume if you bought this device separately, there would have been more branding on the box. But Best Buy and Samsung don’t want you to resell this device since it was free with the purchase of the Galaxy S6 Edge. Hence the reason why it’s unmarked.

Inside the box, we have three things—a Samsung USB wall wart, a microUSB charging cable, and then the sapphire black wireless charging pad itself; which uses Qi wireless charging technology. It looks very much like a little Frisbee disc or a flying saucer with some clear plastic and then a rubber ring to grip the device, whatever device it is sitting on top. Some people think that all you need is the pad itself to charge the device. But you actually need a micro USB charging cable to plug into the pad. So it’s wireless to a certain degree but not entirely. I just thought I’d mention that.

With that said, all you need to charge the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge or other Qi wireless charging-enabled device is to simply set it on top of the charging pad and it’ll start charging just like that. I haven’t tested this with any other device besides the Galaxy S6 Edge but it really does a great job charging the Galaxy S6 Edge as long as you place it in the middle of the charger. Otherwise, it just won’t really charge. As you can see here, it needs to be generally in the middle. But you don’t have to be super precise and it will even let you know if you have it properly aligned or not with the blue LED indicator light.

When it’s fully charged the indicator light will turn green and it will stop charging your device. I believe it only lets you know when your device is charged if you have a Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge so definitely keep that in mind. You will also be able to charge your device through a protective case, which I thought was really cool. Considering just how fragile these new Galaxy S6 devices are, you’re probably going to want to have your device in a case so it’s nice to see that it charges through the case.

Now it’s not going to charge as fast if you plug it directly in via a microUSB charging cable for obvious reasons. Maybe someday, the wireless technology will be good enough. But it’s just not quite there yet.

Overall, I’m impressed with this charging pad. It’s nice and portable. It’s very simple and easy to use. There’s nothing that really bothers me—I would have added some additional weight to make it sit more firmly on my desk but that’s not really a big issue at all. Whether or not I can recommend this device to you depends on how much you hate charging your phone with a cable. This charging pad is very convenient, it’s a very futuristic accessory. But it’s not necessary and it does cost $50; which is a fair price considering other Qi wireless charging pads from other large manufacturers like Google, which has a charging pad that costs about the same price.

So this is the official Samsung wireless charging pad in sapphire black for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Let me know what you think of this device by leaving me a comment down below.
