This is the gold aluminum case with cocoa sport band Apple Watch Series 2. In my opinion, it offers the most bang for your buck when compared to other Series 2 Apple Watch units. It comes in a box like this-- a long, rectangular box that seems like just a waste of packaging but of course, presentation is a big component to Apple products. The first thing in the box is a packet that contains all the literature. You have some product safety information but you also have a smaller Apple Watch band that can be used if you have pathetically frail wrists like myself. This band will come in handy and will make it so that your Apple Watch doesn’t slide up and down your arm when in use-- that will look a little bit weird.
The next item on the box is the Apple Watch Sport Series 2 in gold with a cocoa band. Why it’s not the first item on the box is beyond me but that’s just what Apple decided on this year. The last two items are the one meter magnetic charging cable and a 5 watt USB power adapter, which is something that is only included with Series 2 Apple Watches.
So the Apple Watch I had before was the original black Sport model. At the time, it was one of the best models to go with because it was the cheapest and one of the sleekest options out there. I personally liked to add the price of a product in with the review because I believe it to be extremely important. How much can you get for x amount of money? The Sport Apple Watch offers all the main components found in the higher end models but just with a stealthier, less-polished look. It still costs a lot of money and I’m not really sure why someone will pay twice as much for a stainless steel watch that has all the same basic functionality as the cheaper model. But that way of thinking has carried down to the S2 model.
The Apple Watch has two gold aluminum case with cocoa Sport bands. It’s one of the cheapest options available yet it features a beautiful gold case and a cocoa band that pairs very well with the gold. I did lie a little bit. I know why one would pay extra for a shiny Apple Watch. It’s because it’s stylish, it is a sign of wealth. But this model features a gold look, which right away tells you that it’s not cheap. Also, the cocoa band is not basic. In layman’s terms, the color would be described as a fancy brown. But it only looks brown in a well-lit environment. Everywhere else, it looks like a dark gray. Either way, I think the band looks great.
One thing I don’t like about the Series 2 in terms of the build is that it’s a bit thicker than the Series 1. It’s only about 1mm thicker but for a wearable device, every mm matters. What about internals? The Series 2 is a noble upgrade to the Series 1 Apple Watch. It features a dual-core processor, which the new S1 models will also feature. It has a water resistance of 50m so you can go swimming with this device and not have to worry about it being damaged. There’s a ceramic back as opposed to a composite back and a two times brighter OLED Retina Display with Forced Touch. This display can output 1000 nits of brightness whereas the Apple Watch Series 1 can only output 450 nits of brightness. That’s a pretty impressive statistic. Apple says this is the brightest screen it has created on any of its devices. There’s also a neat trick wtih the digital crown. You can rotate the digital crown up to subtly wake up the screen. It looks very, very elegant.
The Series 2 is running watchOS 3, which alone can speed up any Apple Watch. It sped up my Apple Watch Series 1. But with a new dual-core processor, the Apple Watch becomes a lot more enjoyable to use. It doesn’t take nearly as long to load apps or switch between different apps. The new OS brings a new layout and I’m glad they did simplify the layout here as one of my complaints last year with the old Apple Watch was with the confusing OS. As you can see, the new layout is much more intuitive. You can view all your apps by pressing the digital crown. You can press the side button to view staple apps like Messages, Calendar, Activity and reset apps and so forth. One of the new features is to call emergency services directly from your Watch by long pressing the side button. I accidentally called 911 from my Apple Watch when I first set up this watch. So if you do purchase an Apple Watch, be sure not to accidentally call 911. You don’t want an officer showing up at your door, just saying.
