Several owners of the BlackBerry Bold 9930 and Torch 9850 on Sprint have been getting an over the air bump to BlackBerry 7.1 over the past few days, an update that brings with it mobile hotspot functionality. If you've got one of those two devices and the new software hasn't made its way to your neck of the woods, though, your wait for the update can now end. (As long as you're a Windows user, that is.) The 7.1 update is now available for download straight from the BlackBerry website, but the fact that it's an .exe file means that Mac users will have to continue to keep an eye out for the OTA. As far as what kinds of changes the update contains, it sounds like the aforementioned mobile hotspot feature is the most notable addition, but I'm sure has RIM tucked some other goodies inside.
Although this update may not sound like a major one for Bold 9930 and Torch 9850 owners, the fact that it packs in mobile hotspot functionality is noteworthy since it's the first time that the BlackBerry crowd has officially had access to the feature. Unfortunately, there's no word yet on when owners of other BlackBerry devices on other carriers will be getting in on the hotspot fun, but as usual we'll keep you updated as we hear more.
