Google Home Max is being retired

Three years after its launch, the Google Home Max is being retired.

Google confirmed today that it has stopped manufacturing the Google Home Max smart speaker and that the final units it had available in the Google Store have sold out. The company stressed to Engadget that the Google Home Max will continue to receive updates, though:

"Existing Google Home Max users shouldn’t worry as they won’t see any change in their service. We'll continue to offer software updates and security fixes to Google Home Max devices. We're committed to delivering great sound and whole home audio features across all of our Assistant-enabled products."

The Google Home Max launched in late 2017 as Google's supersized premium smart speaker. Priced at $399.99, it included dual 4.5-inch woofers and custom tweeters plus a Smart Sound feature that would analyze the layout of your room and adjust the Google Home Max's audio to make sure it sounded great.

While Google has released updated versions of its regular and mini-sized smart speakers, the Google Home Max never got an updated model. Google has said that its Nest Audio and Nest Mini speakers have improved audio over their Google Home-branded predecessors, and so taking all that into account, it's looking like there may not be an updated Google Home Max in the plans.

If you still want a Google Home Max despite the fact that it's now retired, you can still buy one from some other online retailers, and at a discount, too: B&H Photo is currently selling the Google Home Max for $179.00 and Verizon has it for a similar price.
