AT&T weighing cheaper phone plans that include ads

Monthly cellphone bills often aren't cheap, but AT&T thinks it has a way to help customers save a few bucks.

AT&T is thinking about offering a discount on customers' monthly wireless bill in exchange for consuming some advertising. AT&T CEO John Stankey told Reuters that this offer could launch as soon as one year from now.

"I believe there’s a segment of our customer base where given a choice, they would take some load of advertising for a $5 or $10 reduction in their mobile bill," Stankey explained.

Details on AT&T's ad-subsidized cellphone bills are still light. However, AT&T's planned launch of a new version of HBO Max with ads next year will be a "foundational element" that'll bring in new advertising inventory and be key to new ad-supported phone plans, Stankey said.

Saving $5 or $10 per month may not sound like much, but every little bit adds up and it could save more than $100 per year if Stankey's description of the plan ends up happening. We don't really know what kind of ads the customer would get, but there may be some customers out there willing to put up with a little more advertising in exchange for a cheaper monthly bill.
