OnePlus 8 Pro color filter camera update will limit functionality, feature will be disabled in China

One of the more unique features of the OnePlus 8 Pro is its color filter camera, which OnePlus has touted as helping you to change the way a scene looks using its Photochrome filter. That camera has gotten a lot of attention in recent days for doing something else, though, and so OnePlus is making some big changes to it.

OnePlus announced today that it's working on an update for the OnePlus 8 Pro's color filter camera that'll let you use the Photochrome filter "while limiting other functionality that may be of concern."

The company will be going one step further in China, where it will temporarily disable the Photochrome filter altogether. OnePlus says it's doing this "out of an abundance of caution about some false and misleading information circulating on social media."

It was recently discovered that the OnePlus 8 Pro's color filter camera could be used to see through some plastics, like the ones used on the Apple TV and Switch Pro controller. That's pretty neat, but a video from Unbox Therapy shows that the camera can also see through some clothes. It appears that the clothes would have to be pretty thin and without a bunch of designs for this to work, but that's likely the "functionality that may be of concern" that OnePlus is referring to.

OnePlus says that its update to limit some functionality of its color filter camera will begin rolling out in the coming weeks.
