Fortnite will be available on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 at launch

Fortnite is available on most every modern gaming platform out there, and today it's been confirmed that the game will be making the jump to next-gen consoles, too.

Epic Games confirmed today that Fortnite will be available on the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 at launch. The news came today as part of Epic's announcement of its Unreal Engine 5 platform.

"We will release Fortnite, built with UE4, on next-gen consoles at launch and, in keeping with our commitment to prove out industry-leading features through internal production, migrate the game to UE5 in mid-2021," Epic explained.

The version of Fortnite that's launching on next-gen consoles won't be an entirely new version of the game, but it will be optimized to take advantage of the new hardware and features of Microsoft and Sony's new consoles. Epic isn't saying exactly how Fortnite will take advantage of the Xbox Series X and PS5 hardware, but it does say we can expect improved performance and visuals.

The good news for folks already deep into Fortnite is that Epic plans to support cross-progression across the new consoles, so your account, progression and items will carry over. Also planned is cross-play across all platforms, including current and next gen consoles.

And for folks planning to stick with the Xbox One or PlayStation 4, Epic has confirmed that it plans to support Fortnite on existing platforms in addition to next-gen consoles.

Fortnite is one of the biggest games in the world, so it's no surprise to hear that it'll be available on next-gen consoles. It's likely still a relief for many Fortnite fans to know that the popular battle royale game will be on the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 at launch, though.
