iPhone 12 schematic leak shows how Apple will shrink its notch

A leak last week claimed that one of the iPhone 12 Pro Max's upgrades will be a smaller notch, and now another leak has surfaced that appears to back that claim up.

New images show schematics of a smaller iPhone notch where the speaker is moved up into the bezel of the phone rather than living in the notch where it's been located since the iPhone X. Leaker Jon Prosser says that the microphone is located with the speaker in this design.

Today's leak appears to include a CAD schematic from a factory along with a higher quality version to help us better see the layout of the notch. There's an infrared camera, flood illuminator, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, front camera, and dot projector all in the notch itself while the speaker has been squeezed into the slimmed down bezel at the top of the phone's face.

Apple has been using the same phone design for the past few years, ever since it moved to the full-screen look with a notch on the iPhone X. Because of that, it's expected that Apple will move to a new design this year that rumors say will be similar to the iPad Pro with flat sides and glass.

Moving to a new design could include slimming the notch and giving users a bit more screen real estate. It's not likely that we'll see Apple eliminate the notch entirely because it still needs a place to put that front camera for both Face ID and selfies, plus it's got several sensors that help it to work, but a smaller notch paired with thinner bezels would be a welcome improvement for the iPhone 12.
