New Chromecast Ultra with Android TV and a remote reportedly coming

It's been more than three years since Google launched the Chromecast Ultra, but a new model may finally be coming.

Google is said to be prepping a new Chromecast Ultra model for launch later in 2020. According to 9to5Google, this new Chromecast Ultra will have a dongle form factor and be based on Android TV. It's purportedly codenamed "sabrina".

The device is said to look like the regular Chromecast that launched in 2018 with a softer design than the existing Chromecast Ultra. It'll reportedly have a Google "G" logo like other Chromecast models and an HDMI connector, and it's expected to include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 4K HDR support.

One notable new feature of this upcoming Chromecast Ultra is a remote. You can control the Chromecast Ultra with the remote, which will feature a microphone and a dedicated Google Assistant button, and you'll allegedly be able to program the remote for use with your TV, too.

The remote's design is said to be a cross between the Daydream View controller and an Apple TV remote. Interestingly, a Google remote for an unknown device passed through the FCC this week (via Janko Roettgers), and so this mystery remote could belong to the upcoming Chromecast Ultra. You can see an image of the remote below.

There's no information on when this new Chromecast Ultra will launch or how much it'll cost when it does.

We haven't seen a ton of new Android TV devices launched lately, and most of them that are available are set-top boxes meant to sit on a shelf next to your TV. This upcoming Chromecast Ultra could be a smaller dongle option for folks who just want a dongle that hangs from the back of their TV and doesn't take up any space on their entertainment center.
