We've seen the Pixel 4 leaks and rumors ramping up lately, but today Google surprised us all by giving us an early look at its next flagship Android phone.
The official Made by Google account on Twitter today shared a photo that shows the Pixel 4 with multiple rear cameras in a square housing. The bottom of the phone's backside has a Google "G" logo like past Pixel phones, and there looks to be a white power button on the side of the phone. "Well, since there seems to be some interest, here you go! Wait 'til you see what it can do. #Pixel4", Google tweeted.
The image shared by Google doesn't reveal much, but there does appear to be two rear cameras and a flash in that square camera module. It's unclear what the third sensor at the top might be, but it could be a Time of Flight (ToF) sensor to help capture depth info. We've seen ToF sensors on several other Android flagships recently, and so perhaps Google decided to adopt one to step up its Pixel photography game.
It'll be interesting to see exactly what features Google has packed into the Pixel 4's cameras. The past three Pixel phones have all had a single rear camera, even as most other flagships moved to double and triple rear camera setups, but now Google is finally jumping on the trend. The Pixel phones are widely considered to be some of the best smartphone cameras on the market, so we're looking forward to seeing what the Pixel 4 can do with multiple sensors.
Google's past three Pixel flagships have all been announced in early October, and it's likely that the Pixel 4 will be as well. That's what makes Google's tweet today such a surprise. The bad news is that we still have to wait four months before we get to learn more about the Pixel 4 and its features. Fingers crossed for another surprise Pixel 4 confirmation tweet from Google in the near future!
