It seems like every entertainment company out there has a streaming service, and later this year, Disney will add one of its own.
Disney+ will launch in the U.S. on November 12th. Pricing will be set at $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year, which works out to be $5.83 per month. Over the next two years, it's expected that Disney+ will launch in each major region of the world.
When it comes to content, Disney+ will offer movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic, as well as all 30 seasons of The Simpsons, which will be available on day one. Other specific content coming to Disney+ include the entire Disney Signature Collection which will be available on day one; all Pixar theatrical shorts, which will be available at launch; and all Pixar films will be available in the first year of launch. All Star Wars films will roll out within the first year of launch, too.
Disney will also have original content on the service. This includes a live action series called The Falcon and The Winter Soldier from Marvel Studios, the documentary Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2, a scripted live action Star Wars series called The Mandalorian, and the animated film The Phineas and Ferb Movie. Disney+ will have more than 25 original series and 10 original films in its first year.
In the first year, you'll have access to more than 7,500 show episodes and 500 movies on Disney+.
Other notable features of Disney+ include customized settings and individual profiles, with the ability to make your own profile yours with custom characters from the Disney library. Disney+ will also offer downloading so that you can watch content offline.
Disney+ will be offered on a "wide range of mobile and connected devices", including game consoles, streaming media boxes, and smart TVs. It'll support playback at up to 4K HDR.
At $6.99 per month, Disney+ could get itself quite a few subscribers who want regular access to Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel content. We'll have to wait and see what the quality of Disney+'s original content is, but we're betting a lot of folks will happily plunk down for a monthly subscription just to have easy access to Disney's back catalog along with offline viewing.
