We're still waiting for the first Android smartphone with a Snapdragon 855 processor to come to market, but while we wait, some benchmark numbers for the new flagship Qualcomm chipset have come out.
Qualcomm recently put together a Snapdragon 855 reference device that looks like it could be a modern Android phone and loaded it up with benchmark apps like AnTuTu, Geekbench, and more. The folks at Android Central spent some time running tests on this Qualcomm device and a Snapdragon 845-equipped Google Pixel 3 and determined the average score after three tests in each app.
In AnTuTu 7.1.1, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 reference device put up a 52 percent better score than the Pixel 3, with the former scoring a score of 359346 and the latter 236344. The SD855 outperformed the Pixel 3 in most of AnTuTu's other tests, including a 74 percent higher score in the CPU test.
The Snapdragon 855 device outperformed the Pixel 3 in Geekbench, too. The SD855's single core score was 3501 and its multicore score was 11189, while the Pixel 3's single core score was 2348 and the multicore score was 7896.
Now, it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that the Snapdragon 855 reference device outperformed a device with last year's flagship chip. Qualcomm previously told us that the SD855 offers 45 percent better CPU performance and 20 percent better GPU performance, among other improvements like 3x the AI performance of the SD845. It's also worth reiterating that these SD855 tests were run on a reference device; it'll be more interesting to see what numbers it puts up on a real phone that's available to the public. For now, though, it's still interesting to take a look at these benchmark numbers as we wait for the first SD855 smartphone to launch.
As for when that'll happen, the Samsung Galaxy S10 will debut in a little over a month, and there's a good chance it'll have a Snapdragon 855 at its core when it does. Until then, hit the link below for many more benchmark numbers from Qualcomm's SD855 reference device.
