Apple Wallet gains support for student ID cards

Apple Wallet can already hold your credit cards, loyalty cards, passes, and coupons, and now it's gaining support for another type of card.

Apple announced today that its Wallet app can now hold student ID cards. The feature works at three universities to start: Duke University, the University of Alabama, and the University of Oklahoma. The feature will expand to Johns Hopkins, Santa Clara University, and Temple University by the end of this school year.

After adding their student ID to their iPhone or Apple Watch, students can more easily pay for laundry or food and quickly get into the school gym or library. They just need to hold the iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader where student ID cards are accepted.

This is a pretty nifty feature for students. Just like with other cards that you can store in Wallet, being able to keep your student ID in Apple's Wallet app means that you no longer have to remember to grab it before you leave the house. As long as you've got your phone, you can get around your school's facilities and pay for your lunch.
