AT&T launches LTE-LAA coverage in Indianapolis

Earlier this year, Indianapolis became just the second city to get AT&T's 5G Evolution service. Now the Indiana city is among the first to get another AT&T network feature.

AT&T has deployed Commercial LTE-Licensed Assisted Access (LTE-LAA) technology in select parts of downtown Indianapolis. AT&T LTE-LAA coverage will be expanded to more areas of downtown Indianapolis by the end of 2017.

LAA is an LTE technology that utilizes unlicensed 5GHz spectrum and combines it with LTE in the licensed band to create a larger pipe to offer faster data speeds.

AT&T says that this LAA technology will play an important role as the carrier works to reach theoretical peak network speeds of 1Gbps. In LAA field tests, AT&T achieved peak wireless speeds of 979Mbps.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is currently the only phone on AT&T that supports LAA tech.
