Prototype of $1195 RED Hydrogen One shown off on video

Last month we saw RED tease a new smartphone called the Hydrogen One. The company hasn’t said much else about its new phone since then, but today the Hydrogen is getting shown off on video.

Marques Brownlee, aka MKBHD, today shared a video that shows a RED Hydrogen One prototype. The phone features a metal panel on its rear with kevlar panels above and below it as well as grips on the sides. The sides are also home to power/lock, volume, and camera buttons.

Around back there’s a dual rear camera setup, and the front of the RED Hydrogen One holds front-facing speakers. Other features include a 5.7-inch display as well as a USB-C port and 3.5mm jack on the bottom of the phone.

The RED Hydrogen One’s holographic display wasn’t shown on video (though its effect might be lost even if it was), but Brownlee did record his reaction to seeing it for the first time. He says that the display wasn’t perfect and that there was some light bleed, but that it is still a prototype.

Finally, we get to see a bit of RED Hydrogen One’s modular capabilities. The end of the video includes a brief look at the Hydrogen One with a large lens attached to help beef up its camera performance.

RED is taking pre-orders for the Hydrogen One, with pricing set at $1,195 for the aluminum model and $1,595 for the titanium version. The phone is slated to begin shipping in Q1 2018.

The RED Hydrogen One sounds like an impressive device, though considering its price tag, it needs to be. The holographic display is one of the more unique features, and a lot of folks are likely interested in seeing it in action. RED has said that it’ll have a working Hydrogen One prototype in the next 30 to 45 days, so hopefully we’ll get to learn more about the phone and its display then.
