Leading up to today’s reveal of the OnePlus 5, leaks of the specifications and design of the phone were rampant. Many of those rumors were confirmed, leaving little left to the imagination. On the other hand, while most information was already available, the OnePlus 5 still manages to bring shocking specs to the table that allow it to directly compete once again with the big leagues like LG, Samsung, and HTC, all of whom have already released at least one flagship device this year.
The first thing that stands out about the OnePlus is its design. It’s a familiar sight, which is probably what makes it stand out so much. A common theme this year for flagships is to make bezels as slim as possible, allowing a phone’s screen to get bigger without increasing its overall physical size; the OnePlus 5, however, did not do this. The company has already explained that they simply didn’t have enough resources to make this happen.
The rest of the device displays a difference in design from its predecessor with rounded corners and less visible antenna lines. The dual-lens camera also takes up a smaller footprint in the upper lefthand corner of the back of the device rather than its old central location. A OnePlus logo is displayed in in the middle center of the device. OnePlus continues to use a matte finish on the back of its device.
Not much has changed about the front of the device with its 5.5-inch 1080p display, physical home button/fingerprint sensor, and front-facing camera.
That brings us to the internals of the device, of which there are two variants. The OnePlus 5 runs on the newest 2.45GHz Snapdragon 835 processor, an impressive 6 or 8GB of RAM, 64 or 128GB of internal storage, dual-lens rear-facing camera with 20-megapixel and 16-megapixel sensors (f/2.6 and F/1.7 aperture), 16-megapixel front-facing camera, 3,300 mAh battery with Dash Charge, and runs on OnePlus's OxygenOS. It uses USB-C charging, and yes, it features a 3.5mm headphone jack. It will come in two colors: Midnight Black and Slate Gray.
The OnePlus 5 brings many improvements to the table. OnePlus 5 is the slimmest OnePlus device ever at 7.25mm. OnePlus claims that users can get a full day’s charge in just 30 minutes with Dash Charge. OxygenOS received some updates as well, including a new Reading Mode that utilizes an ambient sensor to make it easier to read on the phone. Also, OnePlus 5 is a true world phone, allowing support for up to 30 network bands around the world.
The OnePlus 5 will retail for $479, and pre-orders begin today, and its release date is set for June 27th.
