Google's Rick Osterloh says 'premium' Pixel 2 coming this year

With the new year comes speculation and anticipation for the year’s new flagship smartphones. That includes Google’s new Pixel, which a company executive recently dropped a couple of details about.

In an interview during MWC 2017, Google SVP of Hardware Rick Osterloh confirmed that Google will release a Pixel 2 this year. “You can count on a successor this year, even if you don’t hear a date from me now,” Osterloh told AndroidPIT

While Osterloh wasn’t ready to divulge any details about the Pixel 2 or its launch date, he did confirm that it’ll be an upper-tier device. “Pixel stays premium,” he said.

Most device makers follow a yearly schedule when it comes to updating their flagships — this is something Osterloh mentioned himself — so it’s not surprising to hear that a Pixel 2 will arrive sometime in 2017. Also expected is that it’ll be a premium device, because Google’s original Pixel is a high-end smartphone and it’d be strange to see Google follow that up with a lower-end phone, especially considering how popular the Pixel is.
