New 5G logo announced by the 3GPP

We’re still a ways away from consumer smartphones with 5G capabilities, but today we got one step closer to 5G becoming a reality.

The 3GPP, aka the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, recently revealed the logo that’ll be used on 5G specifications. The group, which oversees wireless standards, explained that it chose this logo because it wanted “a familiar design aspect with the use of plain black text and textured waves, but to make the logo stronger and sharper.”

In its announcement of this logo, the 3GPP also noted that the 5G Phase 1 specifications will be complete by late 2018, with a Phase 2 completion expected in 2020.

The major US wireless carriers are already talking about their 5G plans and tests, but we’ll have to wait awhile for large-scale 5G rollouts. Also necessary will be hardware to take advantage of that new 5G service. The good news is that at least the 5G standard is making progress, even if that progress is just an official logo.
