Android Things is replacing Brillo as Google's Internet of Things platform

Remember Brillo, Google’s Android-based software focused on the Internet of Things? We haven’t heard much about it in the year and a half since it was first announced, but that’s changing today.

Google has revealed that Brillo is now Android Things. This IoT platform enables developers to create devices using Android APIs and Google services, while also keeping their devices secure by getting updates from Google itself. Android Things includes tools like Android Studio, the Android SDK, Google Play Services, and Google Could Platform.

Today Google is launching an Android Things Developer Preview, and there will be updates to this preview to come. Google touts that you can use the Developer Preview along with a turnkey hardware solution, like the Intel Edison or Raspberry Pi 3, to begin building real products today.

In other IoT news, Google is update its Weave platform to make it easier for devices to connect to the cloud and interact with Google Assistant. Device makers like Belkin WeMo, LiFX, Honeywell, Wink, TP-Link, and First Alert are implementing Weave support, and Philips Hue and Samsung SmartThings already support it.
