LG V34 debuts in Japan, looks like smaller LG V20 with water resistance

As the LG V20 gets close to hitting store shelves and consumers’ hands, LG has introduced a similar-but-not-the-same model in Japan.

The LG V34 is now official, and it’s got many of the same features of the V20. That includes the dual rear cameras, the secondary display above the main display, the Snapdragon 820 processor, and 4GB of RAM. The V34 also comes preloaded with Android 7.0 Nougat, just like the V20.

So what makes the V34 different? For starters, its got a smaller 5.2-inch 2560x1440 display, whereas the V20 has a 5.7-inch 2560x1440 screen. The V34 is also IP67-rated for water and dust resistance, a feature missing from the V20. Finally, the V34 comes with 32GB of storage and a 3,000mAh battery, whereas the V20 has a 64GB of storage and a 3,200mAh battery.

So that’s the good news. The bad news is that the LG V34 appears to be exclusively available on Japanese carrier au, meaning that most of us won’t ever get to use it.

The LG V20 looks like a great device, offering a high-end spec list and unique features like a Quad DAC for improved audio and a secondary ticker display. Water resistance would’ve been a nice addition, though, especially since competition like the Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7 both offer that feature. And while some folks will love the V20’s 5.7-inch display, others will find it too large, and so it’d be nice to have the V34’s 5.2-inch display as an option.

Would you buy the LG V34 if it were widely available?
