iOS 10 Public Beta 1 now available for download

After a couple of developer-only updates, the iOS 10 beta is now available to the public.

Apple is now offering the iOS 10 beta to public testers. To try iOS 10, you’ll need to enroll in the Apple Beta Software Program, then go to beta.apple.com/profile on your iOS device and install the configuration profile. You’ll then be able to install the iOS 10 beta by going into Settings > General > Software Update.

Keep in mind that while you can now test iOS 10, this is still a beta, so it could be buggy. You may want to install it on a secondary device if you have one rather than loading it onto your primary iPhone. The official iOS 10 update will be released to the public this fall.

iOS 10 is compatible with the iPhone 5 and up, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, the iPad 4, the iPad mini 2 and up, and the iPod touch 6th generation.

iOS 10 includes several notable changes. There’s now a “Lift to Wake” feature that’ll show your iPhone’s lock screen when you raise it, letting you get a good look at your notifications before unlocking your phone. You can swipe left on the lock screen to view your widgets, or swipe right to launch into your camera. Control Center has been tweaked, too, gaining 3D Touch actions and the ability to swipe between settings controls, a media control panel, and a HomeKit panel.

Messages has gotten a big overhaul in iOS 10, too. You can make your messages bigger or smaller to simulate you being louder or quiet, and you can also add full screen effects to your messages. Apple is also throwing in an entire App Store for Messages, letting you get stickers and more for your iMessages.

Some of the other tweaks included with iOS 10 include a new Home app for controlling HomeKit devices; refreshed versions of the Apple Maps, Apple Music, and Apple News apps; support for using third-party apps with Siri; and Split View for Safari on the iPad.
