Google launches Motion Stills app for iPhone to turn Live Photos into GIFs

Google has released several iOS apps, and today it added another to its catalog. What’s notable about it is that there’s currently no Android counterpart.

Motion Stills is a new app that can turn your iOS Live Photos into GIFs. Created by Google Research, the app uses video stabilization tech to freeze the background of your Live Photos and loop optimization to have the subject in your foreground replay over and over. You can also combine multiple clips to make a montage.

Once you’ve made a Motion Still, you can share the looping GIF to a messaging, email, or social media app.

Live Photos have been around ever since the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus launched last year, and while Apple has improved them since then, Live Photos aren’t nearly as compatible with other devices and services as GIFs are. With Motion Stills, you can turn your Live Photos into GIFs and easily back them up or share them with anyone. And while Motion Stills isn’t the first iOS app to make Live Photos easier to share, the app is notable because it comes from Google.
