More Moto X 2016 details leak, including info on swappable back plate modules

Hot on the heels of an image leak that gave us a good look at Motorola’s upcoming Moto X phones, a new report has shed some light on the specs of these new Android devices.

According to a report from Evan Blass, the white and black Motorola phones that leaked yesterday are two different devices. The black (shown above) is the higher-end of the two, said to be codenamed Vector Thin, while the white (shown below) is the Vertex. And while they’ve got different spec lists, they do share a feature that’s sure to be highlighted by Motorola when these devices launch.

These new Moto X phones reportedly support swappable modules that use the 16 connector pins that you can see on the back of the white phone above. Called “Amps,” these modules will be similar to the LG G5’s modules in that they’ll let you add features to the regular device. When attached, the protruding rear camera — which you can see on the black device above — will sit flush.

Motorola has reportedly prepped at least six modules for launch. As for what they’ll do, it’s said the Moto X phones will ship with a colored one in the box, sort of like a do-it-yourself Moto Maker. Also rumored to be coming are modules that’ll add stereo speakers, a battery pack, a camera grip with flash and optical zoom, a pico projector, and a rugged cover that’ll also add a wide angle lens for capturing the great outdoors. And those are the Amps that Motorola is reportedly working on; it’s said that third-parties will offer Amps, too.

There are still some details about Motorola’s Amps that are up in the air, like how much each one will cost. It’s good to hear that Moto is prepping several of them for the launch of their phones, though, because while the LG G5 offers a modular design right now, LG only has a couple of modules available right now. LG is working to get more modules out, even reaching out to outside developers for help, but it remains to be seen how many G5 modules will actually come to market.

When it comes to regular specs, the Vector Thin is said to include a 5.5-inch 2560x1440 AMOLED display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 3/4GB RAM, 32GB of storage, a 16-megapixel camera with phase detection autofocus and laser autofocus, and a 2600mAh battery. All of those features are reportedly packed into a body that’s just 5.2mm thick, hence the “Thin” part of its codename.

Meanwhile, the Vertex will allegedly offer a 5.5-inch 1920x1080 AMOLED dispel and Snapdragon 625 processor. Its spec list is also said to include 2/3GB of RAM, 16/32GB of storage, and a 13-megapixel camera with laser autofocus and optical image stabilization. The Vertex’s body is a bit thicker at 7mm, but that means that Motorola has also beefed up its battery, packing in a 3500mAh juice pack.

It’s also expected that Verizon will launch these two phones as members of its DROID family. However, it’s not known when any of them — the Vector Thin, Vortex, or DROID phones — will launch.
