Microsoft sold 2.3 million Lumia devices in Q3 FY16, down from 8.6 million one year ago

Microsoft today released its fiscal Q3 2016 earnings report, and for those of us that are obsessed with mobile, the company’s Lumia sales are the most interesting bit of the announcement.

Microsoft says that during the three-month period ending on March 31, it sold 2.3 million Lumia phones. To compare, it sold 4.5 million Lumia phones in Q2 2016 and 8.6 million in Q3 2015.

While Lumia phone sales experienced quite a drop year-over-year, it’s not totally surprising to see. Over the past year or so, Lumia phones have seen little advertising and carrier support. For example, the Lumia 950 is one of Microsoft’s current flagship phones, and the only US carrier selling it is AT&T. Everyone else buying one is getting an unlocked unit from Microsoft or another retailer. And unless that changes, don’t be surprised if sales of Lumia phones continue to drop.

Have you bought a new Lumia or other Windows 10 Mobile device lately? If so, where did you buy it from?
