Some iOS 9.3 users encountering app freezing and crashing when tapping links

It looks like Apple is having some real issues with software updates this week.

Days after users of older Apple devices were having problems updating to iOS 9.3, reports of link issues have started popping up. Lots of folks are saying that they’re having problems tapping links from within apps like Safari, Mail, Notes, and Messages. When these users try to tap a link, the app can sit there and be unresponsive or crash.

The majority of the folks reporting this link issue seem to be using iOS 9.3 on an iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, or 6s Plus. However, there are some scattered reports of problems on iOS 9.2.1 and on devices like the iPad Air 2.

Apple has yet to comment on this issue, so it’s unclear exactly what is causing the problem, but the official @AppleSupport account on Twitter says that they are “working on this now.” Some folks say that disabling JavaScript can fix the problem with Safari, but the issue persists within other apps, like Mail.

It can be pretty difficult to use Safari when you’re not able to click links, and this issue also means that affected users can’t click links that are shared with them in Messages in Mail. So yeah, this issue is kind of a big deal. The good news is that it sounds like Apple is aware of the problem. Here’s to hoping that a fix is pushed out soon.
