Toward the end of last year and at the start of this one, reports suggested that Twitter was allowing customers to post tweets longer than 140 characters, the current limit. Today Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey today responded to those rumors.
During an appearance on NBC’s The Today Show, Dorsey was asked if the 140-character limit for tweets would be going away. He responded by saying that the limit isn’t going anywhere. “It’s staying,” Dorsey explained. “It’s a good constraint for us and it allows for of-the-moment brevity.”
Past reports have suggested that Twitter was hoping to let users post tweets longer than 140 characters near the end of Q1 2016, but that that timeframe isn’t set in stone. The end of Q1 2016 is coming up in just a couple of weeks, and there haven’t been any rumblings of the limit change sine the last rumor in early July. So for now it looks like Twitter isn’t planning to remove its 140-character tweet limit, but there’s always a chance that that could change in the future.
