NVIDIA SHIELD tablet K1 replaces recalled model, now available for $199

After recalling the SHIELD tablet back in July over concerns that it could start a fire, NVIDIA today launched an updated (hopefully fire-free) version of the device.

The NVIDIA SHIELD tablet K1 features a spec sheet similar to the original SHIELD tablet. It’s got an 8-inch 1920x1200 display, quad-core Tegra K1 processor, 16GB of storage with a microSD slot for adding more storage, 2GB of RAM, front-facing speakers, and a pair of 5-megapixel cameras. Its powered by Android Lollipop, but NVIDIA promises that it’ll get Android Marshmallow “in the coming months.”

So what’s different about the SHIELD tablet K1? For starters, it’s cheaper, coming in at a starting price of $199.99. The SHIELD tablet K1 also does not come with a stylus, wall charger, or microUSB cable like the original SHIELD tablet did. If you want those accessories, you can get a charger for $29.99 and a stylus for $19.99.

The NVIDIA SHIELD tablet was often considered one of the better Android tablets you could buy, offering solid specs and fast updates from NVIDIA. Now we’ve got the SHIELD tablet K1, a similar tablet that’s $100 less. At that price point, NVIDIA’s tablet should be one of the first that you look at when you’re shopping for a new Android tablet.
