BlackBerry Priv will get monthly Android security updates

So far, we’ve seen Google, Samsung, and LG all commit to issuing monthly security updates to their Android devices. And today another member is joining that party.

BlackBerry has committed to issuing monthly security updates to the Priv. BlackBerry says that it will release monthly security updates to Priv units purchased directly from the company (via ShopBlackBerry.com) as well as resellers that’ve agreed to participate in the program and rapidly approve these updates. Those authorized resellers include carriers and dealers.

BlackBerry is all about security. It’s one of the ways that the company is trying to differentiate itself from other smartphone makers, and so it’s no surprise that BlackBerry has committed to monthly security updates for the Priv. That said, it’s still good to see BlackBerry publicly committing to these updates. The move also helps the Priv’s odds at success because buyers now know that they’ll get monthly security updates just like Google, Samsung, and LG phones.

In addition to monthly security updates, BlackBerry says that it can issue hotfixes to all Priv variants and that it will do so when it deems necessary. These hotfixes are updates that will address a critical security issue that can’t wait for a monthly security update.

Finally, BlackBerry is pushing BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) as a third security solution for the Priv. BES will let IT managers control when patches are delivered to devices and which devices get these patches.
