Inbox by Gmail gaining Smart Reply to help you save time

Remember Inbox by Gmail, Google’s other email app? Well this week it’s gaining a new feature that you may want to check out.

Google today announced Smart Reply, a new feature for Inbox that will try to guess how you’d like to respond to an email to save you time. With Smart Reply, Inbox will suggest up to 3 responses that it thinks that you’d be likely to use. You can use one and send the email right away, build on the Smart Reply, or just ignore them and type in your own message.

With Smart Reply, Inbox uses machine learning to determine if an email needs a response and then generate some responses that you might be likely to type, generating natural language replies on the fly. And Google says that the responses that you choose and the ones that you don’t choose will help improve future suggested responses. Google has actually put up a lengthy blog post explaining how the feature works, and you can find it here if you’re interested in learning more.

Smart Reply will be rolling out later this week to both the Android and iOS versions of Inbox. The feature looks like it could help save time while composing email messages, and it’ll be interesting to see how Smart Reply learns and evolves over time.

Do any of you use Inbox by Gmail as your main email app?
