We’ve been looking forward to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for a while now because they’re going to offer software experiences that’ll likely be far better than most in-car software that’s been available recently. Now we’re finally starting to see auto manufacturers announce plans to integrate both services into their vehicles.
Cadillac plans to offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in its 2016 models, which will begin appearing this summer. Apple’s CarPlay service will be available first, with plans to begin offering Android Auto in the 2016 models “at a later date.”
Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be a part of the Cadillac User Experience, or CUE, which includes an 8-inch touchscreen in the car’s dash. Cadillac touts that its CUE has been improved in the 2016 models with a beefier processor that’ll allow for faster start-up, voice recognition, navigation, and more.
There are standalone Apple CarPlay and Android Auto head units available right now, but I’m betting that a lot of new car buyers won’t want to rip out the entertainment system in their vehicle to add in a new unit. Hyundai launched the 2015 Sonata with Android Auto earlier this year, and so it’s good to see another major car maker committing to these new in-car software platforms. Here’s to hoping that Cadillac won’t wait long into its 2016 model year before adding Android Auto support into its lineup.
