Just last fall we were introduced to the new, improved, and larger Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, with the screen size increase (which many thought would never come from Apple) being the headlining feature. Spec and software improvements accompanied the new device as well, of course, but if Apple does as Apple has always done, the beefier version of the same phone is expected to come out later this year in the form of an iPhone 6s.
There’s still about 4 months to go before we officially see the next generation iPhone, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t take a couple of stabs at guessing what the new and improved iPhone 6 will feature. So, without further ado, let’s cut to the chase.
Wireless Charging
Whether it’s done through a way that’s specifically for Apple products or by standard means, I feel like now is absolutely a good time to introduce wireless charging in the iPhone. Even if it’s not the fastest or best method of charging a device, I always stick by my opinion that all phones should have an alternative method to charging, especially in the unfortunate case that the charging port decides to crap out.
Improved front-facing camera
Gone are the days where the only thing that matters is how great the rear-facing camera is. Between video chat and the popularity of the phenomenon we know as “selfies”, the demand for a high-quality front-facing camera is at an all-time high. The 1.2-megapixel camera with improved lightning and higher aperture on the front of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are decent enough, but could still stand to be better. Somewhere around a 5-megapixel front-facing camera would be competitive enough.
Improved rear-facing camera
Along with improvements that are needed on the front-facing camera, the iPhone 6’s rear-facing camera could also stand to be better. Although the 8-megapixel camera on the iPhone 6 isn’t bad by any means, there’s always room for improvement on a smartphone’s camera. That’s basically all there is to say about it; lack of noticeable improvement to the rear-facing camera would be an opportunity missed.
32GB base internal storage
One of the things that really irked me when the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus was originally released was the fact that Apple chose to stick with 16GB of internal storage as the base amount, but completely skipped over a 32GB size. 16, 64, and 128GB are your choices, because that makes a lot of sense. For the iPhone 6s, I think it’s time to drop the 16GB size and make 32GB the new base size.
Efficient notification system
This would probably have more to do with the release of the next version of iOS, but I feel like the iPhone is in some serious need of a better notification system. Ideally, I would like the next iPhone to have an actual LED notification light (on the front of the phone, not the LED options that allow you to use your camera’s blinding flash as a notification light). However, chances are slim for this to ever happen; I think Apple would be much more likely to take a Motorola or Lumia approach to this (like Motorola’s Active Display or Lumia’s Glance). Some sort of sensor that wakes up the phone when the phone is picked up rather than having to press buttons to wake the phone up. This might be trivial to talk about, but either of these options seems better than what the iPhone currently offers in terms of notifications.
